HAND IN HAND International is a small NGO with at about 50 members in different parts of Germany and contact persons in some other countries: e.g. Congo, Senegal, Sudan and Kosovo. Our headquarters are located in the south of Germany in the town of Konstanz. Our common belief is, that we must create ourselves the world that we wish to see and that this world should be a world of justice and solidarity. Our main objectives therefore are:

- To fight against misery in materially poor countries by finding people who pay school fees for children in need or by emergency aid for victims of the Kosovo war.

- The understanding between people, e.g. by international cultural and information events, internships abroad, youth and student exchange.

- Solidarity with foreign students, foreigners and refugees in Europe, e.g. by giving judicial advice/financial support to solve problems with authorities.

Michael Schels (http://www.schels-pr.de) and (http://www.jetztkunst.de)

As a journalist, I had the opportunity to accompany Argile on their West-Africa tour in 1997. The most intensive experience I made, definitely was a concert together with Farafina in their home town Bobodioulassou, Burkina Faso. They played in a "Cabaret" (a courtyard surrounded by high clay walls, typical for this area, used for brewing millet beer and for regular celebrations).

The Cabaret was full to bursting. Over 200 people crowded on less than 100 square yards, many of them children. Calabashes filled with warm millet beer were passed around. Every other minute a new calabash passed ones way, and nobody stayed sober longer than half an hour.

The millet beer garden was rocking, Mani Suleymane, the bandleader of Farafina, gave a sign, and the musicians started a tremendous intro, when suddenly there was a short circuit, cutting off the light as well as the music. After a few minutes, the balafon players started playing in the dark. They filled in the time without electricity with complicated runs and dreamy tunes. An hour and a half later, electricity was back, and an unforgettable session began. Many thanks once again to Dieter Weberpals who made this and a lot more possible.

Helga und Manfred Weule/Malidoma Somé: We in the West are in our consciousness like people who live only in one room of a big house. Its other rooms are not entered or if so, only unintentionally. People in traditional Africa live mostly in other rooms of this house. They show us - e.g. via the "bridge builder" Malidoma Somé from Burkina Faso / USA - how to enter those rooms and how to cooperate with its inhabitants.

The Institute consciousness strategies - persons - groups - organizations supports persons and groups in developing their capability of self-orientation. This work is centered around three elements: 1) finding out one's life purpose, 2) learning to live in community with people and nature and 3) the way of the ritual.

Doris Weller / Meki N'Zewi + AMA-Dialog: Meki N'Zewi is music-ethnologist, drummer and composer from Nigeria who performed also with Argile while his stay in Europe. At the moment he is teaching at the University in South Africa and publishing books about African traditional Music. Very interesting contact!

Gert Kilian: Gert Kilian is known as the "white" european balafon-player, who performed on Argile's debut-CD "Koko". There is a lot more of his music with "Les Zoulousains", "Drumpact" and "Orexis" to be found on his homepage.
